Various Asundry…finding me online and new writing ventures

Well this week has NOT gone as planned.

Tuesday, Rhett was sick.  Lee and Levi were out of school. I was supposed to telework.  Yeah. It didn’t happen.

Wednesday (today), Levi has a stomach virus which I am guessing he got from Rhett. Sigh…Lee will be next, I am certain.

I want to nap.  I am tired.  I have a sinus infection which I just went to the NP to get meds for. Miserable.  I get them 2-3 times a year, almost always at the beginning of fall and spring.

I’m on a roll blogging here so I figured, since I can’t nap (oh I wish I were a napper), I thought I’d share a few things.

Pinterest

Are you on Pinterest?  I joined a while back and have found it to be quite fun. You have to be careful about spammy pins but so far, I’ve found a ton of ideas and a lot of great recipes.  So, if you’re on Pinterest, leave me your Pinterest name so I can find you! I’m thatcarrie on Pinterest.

Oh, about a week ago, I finally (finally) got an iPhone after about two years of talking about it…you think you’re sick of it, you should be Rose. She’s heard about it for YEARS. Just a 4 for now. Hunter will be upgrading soon and he’s going to take the 4 and hopefully, I’ll get a 4s cheaper since the 5 is coming out soon.

With that, I joined Instagram this week.  So far, two pictures.  Impressive, I know. But you can find me at thatcarriega on Instagram if you’d like.  I love, love, love the camera on this iPhone. Now if I can just figure out how to make the darn thing work half the time, I’ll be doing good.

And last but not least…

I have been writing for well over a year now at a site called Mom Prepares.  I’ve been working with these lovely ladies since the start-up and we’re growing leaps and bounds.  I write at least once a week over there.  I hope you’ll come over and join us.

(a little about us, straight from the site)

Mom Prepares is all about empowering women’s lives with the latest, most up-to-date information, and a return to the common-sense lifestyle that made this nation great.

Interested in current events? We’ve got the latest and greatest headlines too!

Need help with gardening and homesteading? Mom Prepares is here to help, with how-to guides and step-by-step instructions for everything from water filtration to rocket stoves.

I believe that’s it for now!  Levi is waking up and he’ll need his snuggling.

Ramblings of the Week: already my favorite blog post of the week

I think that Amanda has quite possibly summed up a lot of how I feel in this post.  You HAVE to go and read it.

The perfect quote that she used from Laura Ingles Wilder (the first part is from Amanda’s blog post):

The last chapter of Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder ends with a big decision for Almanzo. A neighbor, Mr. Paddock has asked him to apprentice as a wheelwright. Mr. and Mrs. Wilder talk about the possibility with Almanzo over dinner:

“Well, son, you think bout it,” said Father. “I want you should make up your own mind. With Paddock, you’d have an easy life, in some ways. You wouldn’t be out in all kinds of weather. Cold winter nights, you could lie snug, in bed and not worry about young stock freezing. Rain or shine, wind or snow you’d be under shelter. You’d be shut up, inside walls. Likely you’d always have plenty to eat and wear and money in the bank.”…
“But there’s the other side, too, Almanzo. You’d have to depend on other folks, son, in town. Everything you got, you’d get from other folks.

A farmer depends on himself, and the land and the weather. If you’re a farmer, you raise what you eat, you raise what you wear, and you keep warm with wood out of your own timber. You work hard, but you work as you please, and no man can tell you to go or come. You’ll be free and independent, son, on a farm.”

Think on it for a while.  Read Amanda’s post.  What a great perspective!

Ramblings ‘round the net

Here’s a few of my favorite rambling stops over the past few weeks.  I like variety (obviously!)  I’ve got some exciting news coming up this week so stick around!

(The post title I reference is the link…you should be able to click it and go to a post.  I checked them all but if one doesn’t work, let me know.)

The quote at the end is perfect: We have to develop the maturity to stop trying to prove something. We have to learn to be content with what we are.

Carrots Love Tomatoes via Thy Hand Hath Provided
Great tips for starting your garden and which plants are complimentary, planting wise.  I need to see if the library has this book.

Answering the Call via The Farmer’s Wife Tells All
Lara offers a great post on meeting your calling in even the smallest ways.  I’ve been following Katie’s blog (Amazima) for a while now and plan to order a necklace as soon as I can!  LOVE the shirts Lara!

A Ugly Mug Cake via Noshings
The perfect individual snack…a cake!  I liken it to Betty Crocker’s Warm Delights which I often pick up when I can get them for FREE!  Of course, don’t ask me about the calories in them…I think the boys will love this; I’ll let you know how it goes.  This could be pretty frugal I think.

Kelli’s wonderful voice discussed heritage lost and the legacy that we as Appalachian women leave our children.

Keep Your Readers Happy via Oh Amanda
Great blog tips!

Frugal Resurrection Eggs via Southern Savers
I’ve been wanting to do this with the boys.  Now I can make two and let them have their own!  This would also be perfect for anyone teaching children Sunday School.

Now, share the wealth.  Where have YOU rambled this week?  Leave me a link to follow!  I’m always looking for new reads.

My dream table

I’ve been lusting after this table for several weeks now, ever since I saw it on the lovely world wide web.

It’s from Restoration Hardware and OUT.OF.MY.LEAGUE.  I LOVE it.  Love it.  What I don’t love is the price tag.  I think they want like $2,000 for this table that looks like it’s made out of salvaged wood!  Seriously?  What planet do they live on?  Anyway, my only changes would be taking out that bottom shelf of the table and making it narrower so chairs will fit.  It also looks like it might sit a little high.  Not sure.

Then I found Ana.  She’s all the buzz here lately on blogs but I’ve been following her a while.  Her blog is called Knockoff Wood.  The girl rocks!  She builds this stuff for next to nothing and shares the plans.   For FREE.  Stop the world.

Ever since I found Ana’s website, I’ve been in love.  Here’s her version of the table.

See what I mean?  Doesn’t she ROCK???  She built her table from scrap wood for less than $10Yep, you read that right.  That’s the link to the plans.  $10 stinking dollars.  Can you believe it?  I’m in awe.  I like how she narrowed the bottom level of the table but I think I want it a little bit wider.  Narrower than the top picture, wider than this one.  I’m not hard to please, am I?

Here are my tables I want for next to our bed.  (Notice the “my” in that sentence.)

Nice, simple and open.  Works for me.  Except I want a little shelf underneath so I can have a basket to hide my junk!

I have all KINDS of projects bookmarked for Hunter from Ana’s site.  He no longer wants to see all this furniture I want!  But seriously Babe?  We can do the kitchen table for around $100.  Our table is falling apart.

Yall have got to go and check her out.

Enjoy!
