Thrifty Decorating: An Easy Halloween Wreath

It’s time.  It’s TIME!  I big.fat.heart.Halloween!  It’s one of my favorite holidays…mainly because it’s all about kids in my world (not evil), it’s fun, and it’s in the fall.  There’s something wonderful about being out in the evening in that cool, brisk air, running from house to house asking for, what else, but CANDY!

My mom was never a big holiday decorator.  She just wasn’t (isn’t).  I did all of our decorating.  Our Halloween decorations consisted of a couple of clay pumpkins and maybe, occasionally, a little figurine or two.  Thatz it.  Depressing right?  I always promised myself I’d do better.  And this year, I mean it!

This is not an original idea (are there any?)  I was flipping through the most recent Parents magazine and saw the most adorable Pumpkin wreath. I found this in the most recent Parents magazine.  I tried to find a link online, but no such luck so I’m doing a little tutorial for yall.  First, let me show you the final product!

Isn’t it cute?!?  I just love it.  Simple and really easy to make.

Ok, to the tutorial

Supplies (I did 2 wreaths):
Wreath (the directions in the recipe calls for 16 inch foam, I used  a 12 inch straw wreath with plastic removed:  Michaels:  1.99 ea)
Orange burlap (I found it at Hobby Lobby for 2.99/yd) cut into strips about 3 inches wide and 20 inches long
Hot glue gun and sticks
black felt (4/$1 at HL)
cardboard
ribbon
scissors
stuffing
something to make a stem out of
(anything without a price, I had on had so FREE!)

1.  Lay your wreath on the cardboard and trace it.  You’re making a back for your wreath.  Cut it out.

As you can see, I had no plain cardboard so a Digiorno box it is!  I told you this was THRIFTY!

2.  Hot glue your cardboard to the wreath.  I had to put a lot of pressure on mine to get a good seal.

3.  Now, fill up the hole in your wreath with the stuffing like this:

It doesn’t have to be packed full, just nice and fluffy.  True confession:  I have an old pillow that the washer tried to eat.  It now has a hole in it and I use it for stuffing (See the thrifty part of this?)

4.  Once you have your hole filled, flip it over carefully and take your first strip of burlap.  Attach it to the edge of the cardboard with hot glue and give it a minute to set.  Then you can slide the burlap underneath the wreath so you can hot glue the other side.  Once your first strip is done, it’ll hold the stuffing in for you.  Although, the straw wreath did hold the fluff pretty well for me.

5.  Repeat Step 4 until you have the entire thing covered with strips of burlap.  The next two pictures are the back

and the front

Tada! Pumpkin!

6.  Now, for the stem, I used some leftover brown fabric.  You could use green.  You could use that foam paper stuff, yarn, a paper sack, or felt.  (The magazine used green ribbon tied into random knots.  I sort of free-handed it with the scissors and came up with this instead.

It’s not perfect but it’ll do.  I hot glued 3 sides together and left the bottom open to insert the stuffing.  Then, I stuffed it lightly and carefully hot glued the stem to the top of the wreath.

7.  For the face, I looked at the picture in the magazine and kind of copied it.   Since I’m no artist, I decided to draw it out on paper and then cut that out for a stencil to use on the black felt.  Here’s my very professional stencil

Yep, I used a crayon.  Impressed aren’t you?

And here’s the felt on a test-fit.

And HERE are the final products!

Aren’t they CUTE???  They turned out way better than I expected!

To hang my wreath, I just took some ribbon that I had and hot glued it to the back of the cardboard but mine lean a little.  I’m thinking of just poking a hole in the back for the hook.  I have metal doors so no Nester method of hanging them.  And I don’t have any over the door hooks for some reason.

Anyway, that’s my DIY tutorial for some thrifty Halloween decorating!
Total cost:
1.99 x 2 (2 straw wreaths)
2.99 (1 yard of fabric—I actually bought 3 for other projects though)
0.25 x 2 (2 felt sheets)
$7.50 for TWO cute wreaths!

Check back in the next few days!  I’m working on another Thrifty Halloween Decor Project now.

Oh!  And the question:  1 wreath has eyebrows, the other does not.  Which one looks better???

Enjoy,

Meal Plan Monday: Week 2

No, I didn’t forget Meal Plan Monday already! I got distracted!!!

Folks, we are officially out of deer meat. You have no idea how shocked I am. Hunter took 6 deer last year and we had another from a friend. Add to that all the free pork and beef we have had over the past two years and it’s been a LONG time since I bought anything but chicken! It’s killing me. WE NEED MEAT!

So, here’s to improvising:

Monday—frozen pizza
Tuesday—pork roast (last one!), mashed potatoes, green beans, biscuits
Wednesday—sandwiches
Thursday—baked chicken, mac-n-cheese, mixed veggies, crossiants
Friday—I don’t know…grocery shopping on Friday
Saturday—FESTIVAL DAY!!!! Who knows what we’ll eat.
Sunday—depends on the grocery trip this week

I can’t believe we’re out of meat. This is crazy. I can’t think of the last time we didn’t have a freezer full of meat. It’s weird.

Ok, Meal Plan Monday. I’m working on some Halloween projects for yall. JP is sick again so I’m at home…again.

Do yall Swag?

I’ve been meaning to ask you guys this but…do yall Swag???

Search & Win

Swagbucks is a search engine program that you can use to do searches, just like google. Only, buried in there are hidden “swagbucks” (i.e. points) that you can earn for doing searches. Once you join and set up an account, when you do a search, your points accumulate in your account. Then you can cash them in along the way for gift cards and other rewards!

I was leery of this at first and didn’t use the program a whole lot. But I’ve read of several other bloggers getting amazon giftcards, Wii’s, new digital cameras, etc and decided to start using it more. I just earned enough points for my first amazon giftcard! Over the past couple of months, I’ve been trying to generate extra income or come up with other ways to buy Christmas presents. Well, HELLO Swagbucks! I’m saving all of my giftcards up for the holiday. You can bank them in your amazon account and use them as you wish or save them for other rewards.

If you’re interested, here’s the link to swagbucks so you can learn more about this search and win program. Oh, they also hide swagbucks on various sites. You can follow the Swagbucks blog and also on twitter to get hints and tips on where they are.

I’ll be honest and tell you that I think I get swagbucks if you join from the link above or from the icon on the bottom of my blog. Just being honest! I’m not really all that sure about how that part works; I’m just excited about my amazon giftcard!

Have fun!

We got it

It was bound to happen. I mean, it’s everywhere.

JP was diagnosed with Type A influenza yesterday. Yep, that one. The swine flu.

Don’t panic. This flu is just like any other flu. We’re “quarantined” of course and he’s on Tamiflu and lots of Motrin/Tylenol. Honestly, when his fever is down, he acts like his regular self. Right now, they’re out on the porch playing. We decided that JL shouldn’t go to school or church as well. So, we’re all at home.

Send up some prayers will ya? When I asked about JL, he said, “he either has it, had it or will have it,” and when I asked about us (Hunter and I), he said “call be when your fever gets above 101.” Not if, when. Sigh…

The former director of our agency passed away suddenly yesterday and his funeral is tomorrow. I would like to go but I don’t know if I’ll be able too. I’d like to pay my respects as he gave me a chance when I was looking for a job. I also have a banquet tomorrow night to get an award and I really want to go. It’s a little bit of a big deal for me.

Hoping to stay well,

Tightwad Tuesday!

I’m trying to get back into a routine. So, here’s an installment of Tightwad Tuesday for you!

This one is easy.

For a long time, I’ve been reading about this product called Fels Naptha.
It’s a bar laundry soap. Sounds weird right? I’d never seen it in the store but I stumbled up on it one day at Ingles. A bar was a whooping $1.27 so I thought I’d give it a whirl.

This stuff is amazing! You rub the bar straight on a stained piece of clothing and then throw it in the wash. It’s pulled all kinds of stains out of my table cloth, the boys clothes and Hunter’s clothes. I could write a book on stain removers that don’t work. But so far, the Fels Naptha bar has removed spaghetti sauce and Georgia red clay like you wouldn’t believe. And it’s cheap!! That’s the best part. It also has a very light and, to me, refreshing smell. It reminds me of an old-timey soap.

I know that a lot of people who make their own laundry soap use Fels Naptha. I haven’t tried to make my own launstry soap yet but I keep planning to. Just because I can!

It took me a while to find Fels Naptha in a store. My Walmart doesn’t carry it. Like I said, I stumbled up on it at Ingles. You can find it at a site called http://www.soapsbegone.com/. When I googled it, it also says that you can buy it on Amazon.

Tightwad Tuesday, just for you!
