The Chicks–Part 2

A cost update. Sigh…..

We’re working on the coop. Hunter’s been swamped but it’s a work in progress. Hopefully we’ll have time finish it in another week. Meanwhile, Pepper and I had to have a little talk, and she has moved back into the crate so the chickens can hang out in her hutch until their coop is finished. They were just too big and starting to fly out. She wasn’t real happy about the situation and I have the scratches to prove it.

Coop Supplies

  • 5 pieces of OSB board for the sides and roof
  • Hinges for the door
  • Wood to build the door
  • Chicken wire
  • Screws? I think.

Total Cost: $110

Luckily, we had the timbers we needed to build the frame and the long screws we needed to put it together. Saved us some and considering what we’ve spent, that’s a good thing! Since we were unable to find any used metal roofing, we’re going to use some shingles left by the former owners of our house for roofing materials. Cost=free. We think this will be all that we need. Think.

I also had to buy feed this week; they finally finished that first 20lb bag of feed. I bought the grower feed, a 50lb bag, for $11. Can I just say that a 50lb bag of chicken feed weighs WAY more than a 50lb bag of dog food! Trust me. 2 kids, 50lbs of chick feed, 50lbs of dog food and 10lbs of rabbit food in a cart is h-e-a-v-y.

The coop has made this economical project not so economical. Sigh….these eggs better be GOOD.

I’m alive…really

It’s been a whirlwind here this week. Hunter has been working long days and nights, including digging trees until midnight one night. So, it’s been me and the boys a lot this week. This morning, I woke up feeling terrible but went on to work (luckily, my trip to Macon got canceled). By 1030 I came home and went to see the local NP. It’s basically a really irritated sore throat that’s headed toward infection so I’m on antibiotics. Fun stuff.

I have a bunch of posts planned and have been taking pictures. Soon I promise.

Night!

A Cool Giveaway for Chicken Owners! And a New Blog!

I try not to take too much advantage of you guys but I have to try for this one!

My buddy from It’s a Slow Learning Curve turned me on to this contest. I can’t believe I haven’t seen this blog before! I’m so disappointed in myself.

GeorgiaFarmWoman (Life on A Southern Farm) is giving away a Chicken Nest Box. Yall know that our chicks are fast outgrowing their little home and that we’re supposed to be finishing our coop. Hunter’s built me some nest boxes but these are SWEET. So, check out her blog and check out HenPals Nest Boxes for more information, prices and pictures of cute chicks!

Maybe I’ll win! Thanks C for letting me know!

The definition of a friend

What is your definition of a true friend? Is it someone you talk to every day or can you only talk to them once a month? Can you have a true friend that you’ve never met? What about those people that you’ve been friends with for years that perhaps you’re just not as close to anymore? How do you really define what a friend is?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. For several reasons I guess. I have several “groups” of friends. I have the people I know in real life….two wonderful ladies from church and my cousin that I talk to frequently. One I talk to daily that is probably my closest “in real life” friend at this point. Then I have a group of about 20 fantastically awesome ladies that I talk to daily. We met on a message board for parents nearly 4 years ago and formed a group of moms who work outside the home. We used to be a bigger group but, over 4 years, we’ve lost a few and we’ve created a private board. To be completely honest, I couldn’t make it without them. They are my support system. They are my day to day conversation, the ones I bounce ideas off of, the ones I vent to, the ones that I don’t have to hold anything back from. And no, I haven’t met one of them. But I do talk on the phone to my “soul sister” at least once a month, if not more! I also have my budget buddy from this group though she’s been scarce here lately. And I have others that I have become really close with. Again, couldn’t live without them.

I have a college friend whom I consider probably my best friend though we don’t talk as often as we used to. She just had a baby so she’s kinda….busy! But, I know I can call her crying and she’ll stop what she’s doing and listen and encourage me. We grew up similarly and have a lot in common but we now live a state apart. And she has dial up…God bless her. Our phone calls are long and well worth it when we can find the time.

I have my BFF (can a 30 year old say BFF and still sound legit?) from middle school that I still keep in close contact with. But now she’s moving across the country (temporarily) which makes me sad but I understand her reasons. I love her. We’re at different places in our lives and we can get totally peeved at one another and not speak for weeks or months but then one will call the other and we instantly forgive. But, we’re not as close as we used to be and I miss that. And I guess I’m scared we’ll grow even further apart with the move.

And last, but never, ever least is Hunter. He is truly the best friend I will ever have. He makes me laugh like no one. He knows when to let me cry and when to let me rage. He knows how to calm me down and how to tick me off. He loves me unconditionally and I love him unconditionally. We are imperfect and we struggle together. He holds me up when I can’t hold myself up. I try to do the same for him.
So, what’s your definition of a friend? We all have different kinds of friends and different levels of friendship. But I’ll be honest. That little tool on Facebook for Friends kind of irks me. Not everyone is a friend. And perhaps our definition of “friends” has changed so much that maybe that’s why friendships don’t last. Are we just friends with anyone? I hate to think of friends as disposable but I feel like that’s how we view them these days. That’s why I won’t give up on the ones I have. I have a hard time getting to know people because I can be reserved (at least initially…don’t laugh Mandy). So, for me, friendships mean so much. My group of friends may seem large but it’s not really. I consider myself lucky to have them.

But the question still remains, how do you define a friend? Can bloggy world (or internet world) friends be true friends? Have we become a society of disposable friends like we have in everything else? Are we just too scared to commit to work at a friendship? If it’s too hard, do we just give up? What do yall think?

(knock, knock…anyone still there?)

Thanks for listening to my ramblings today

Tightwad Tuesday—Think About Gardening!

It’s spring time! Or so I thought. Mother Nature has decided that tonight we’ll have freezing weather so it’s sure not feeling like spring. At any rate, it’s time to start thinking about gardening.

Having a garden offers you so many benefits. Not only are you going to grow food that your family can eat—food that you know what it’s been treated with (if you go that route), how it’s been fertilized and where it came from—but you’re also getting the health benefits of gardening. It’s good for your body (a workout) and it’s good for the soul. There’s nothing like coming home from a long day of work to wander in your garden picking green beans, pulling tomatoes and seeing what you’ve got coming in that day. It calms me. Last year we planted 4 varieties of tomatoes (8 plants), bell peppers, jalapeños, corn, ornamental pumpkins, green beans, squash, zucchini, hot peppers and Tabasco peppers. I think that was it.

I canned food for the first time last year. It’s hard, hot, long, time consuming work but we have really enjoyed having our home grown food this year! Last year I canned spaghetti sauce, tomatoes, green beans, apple butter (which we have not eaten so I won’t do it again), and then I pickled jalapeños and mixed peppers for Hunter. He’s working on them. I also froze tomatoes, a couple of random small batches of spaghetti sauce and shredded zucchini and squash (not used so won’t do again). I kind of let my herb drying go but I plan to get back to that this year. I need to organize this better.

We didn’t have a ton of anything except just plain tomatoes canned/frozen. We’ve used up all of the green beans and we have 1 jar of spaghetti sauce left. Still lots of tomatoes but that should be fine. I can simmer those down into tomato sauce and chili at any time.

Gardening can seem so overwhelming and daunting but give it a try. You don’t have to have top of the line stuff and you don’t have to be a professional. You can rent a tiller from a local hardware store for about $35/day if you’ve got really tough soil like our red clay. Even soil amendments (manure, compost, etc) can be bought if your soil needs it. This does make it a bit more expensive but over time, if you use the same area, you won’t need it as you steadily improve your soil.

If you live in an apartment, consider container gardening. Just buy some good potting soil to start with and be sure to buy the best looking plants you can find (and on a side note, go to a hardware store or a local greenhouse and buy them—BUY LOCAL!!!) Sure they’re probably shipped in too (unless they’re bought from my dad!) but you’re still supporting a local business instead of a big box store. Even if you only do 2-3 plants in larger containers, you will provide yourself and your family with some tasty grub for the summer (and the winter if you just freeze it). I’ll do more on canning/freezing once that time is here. You could also start smaller than that and just really focus on herbs in a window. Just try 2-3 of your favorites. Herbs can be hung to dry in the top of a closet, the basement door, or they can be dried in your microwave. Just don’t set your microwave on fire like I did. :o ) True story.
I started years ago with herbs in the window. Then I did an herb pot and just put 5 or so herbs in a huge pot on the back porch. Then I did tomatoes in the huge pot on the porch and separated the herbs into smaller pots on a shelf on the back porch of my duplex. I also managed to plant green peppers in pots when Hunter and I got married, forgot about them and looked over one day and saw red and green peppers shining! Pots will work! Just don’t expect those huge peppers you get in the store. Your peppers will be smaller but they will taste WAY better. I promise.

Start thinking about it. Look it up online and do a little research. Check your local extension office for information and talk to them. They’re a really valuable source of information on what will work and what won’t work in your area. I always wait until after Easter since our chance of frost declines dramatically after that…and tonight? Freeze warning. I’m worried about my Japanese Maples, Azaleas and Tea Olives right now!

Good luck and I hope you’ll post your progress as we get into gardening season!
